Headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts, it oversees the fraternity across fifteen states, from Maine to Wisconsin, setting its direction, safeguarding its degrees, and supporting the Valleys where members meet.
Brand story
The Supreme Council was formally organized in New York City on August 5, 1813, and has guided the Scottish Rite in the North for more than two centuries. Its home since 1968 has been Lexington, Massachusetts, where its offices now share a building with the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, keeping the work of the fraternity close to the archives that record its history.
The Supreme Council is made up of Active and Active Emeritus Members, who serve as its trustees, and is led by the Sovereign Grand Commander. Each of the fifteen states in the jurisdiction has an Active Member who serves as its Deputy, so every Valley has a direct line to the Supreme Council.
Once a year, the Supreme Council meets to conduct the business of the fraternity. In alternating years, that meeting also confers the honorary 33rd degree on Brothers elected to receive it, recognizing outstanding service to Freemasonry and to the communities they live in.
